Chicks dig scripts…( and so do some dudes too)

Last week I had an interesting meeting with the lovely Fig Taylor at the AOI offices ( yes I did join, finally) which shed some light on my folio.

I won't go into all the details, needless to say it was well worth doing, but this piece is kind of an ode to one of the conversations we had.

Getting better...

I spent a bit of time this morning doing the usual peruse of the internet and twitter and came across this video - I feel like i might have heard it before - I listen to a lot of This American Life podcasts - but the video I'm mentioning is a clip of Ira Glass talking with some animated typography.

Its about writing but essentially its also about creative work. Have a look...

I'm probably still fairly early along in years compared to some other lettering artists out there - i was self taught and a late starter I should explain -  but this soundbite pretty accurately summarises the last few years and the continued progress - you're surrounded by work from others that you know is great and you certainly aspire to a similar greatness but you never quite manage it.

I can only say that you get closer with each practice. Give up and try something else if you want - the world needs all of the people who do non creative work as much as anyone else, but if you have the commitment to keep trying at this, then rest assured that whatever happens, you will at least get better at it.

Cafe Recharge - Chalk board

Hchalk2.jpg

I was commissioned for the first time back in November by H at the Recharge Cafe on Roman Road to pay him a visit with the old chalk pens and draw him up a new chalk menu.

It was great to finally do some chalk lettering for such a traditional and age-old usage.

The entire board was freehand with little measuring for layout - we were adding things in as we went along.

The finished piece took an hour or so interspersed with some coffees and home made banana cake - the perks of lettering in a cafe :)

Making Faces @ St Brides Library

Several weeks ago I was contacted by Becky from the St Bride Foundation to invite me, alongside a selection of other talented folk, to live-letter at the film screening of the documentary Making Faces.

The film was great, genuinely interesting watching someone as talented as Jim Rimmer going through the various processes involved in both designing and making a typeface digitally and in metal. Richard Kegler, who directed the film, was there to introduce the film and conduct an informal Q&A afterwards

As well as meeting some people, I got busy with the pens and worked on an ad-hoc poster for the event

I've just returned from a lovely late summer holiday to Spain for some sunshine and a rest! We visited Seville and Cadiz and there was a variety of type and lettering to see on our travels. Here is a selection of found lettering and a few I did myself whilst I was there...

Type Tasting at the V&A - Live Lettering

"Lets do some type" - Live lettering

"Lets do some type" - Live lettering

So if you checked out my last post on here then you'll know that last weekend I had the pleasure of doing some of my trademark lettering 'live' at the V&A for Type Tasting as part of the London Design Festival 2013.

It was a really busy day and loads of people dropped by to say hello and get stuck in doing some lettering of their own.

I was kept pretty busy lettering various comments and phrases - some that popped into my head and some that I heard people in the room saying.

My favourite of the day was this piece - Something I heard from a girl named Hema - who also made the same word for her Type Tasting contribution

The collection of submitted words for the exhibition are on display in the Sackler Centre at the V&A until Friday.

Live lettering at the V&A for Type Tasting

liveletteringWeb2.jpg

With the London Design Festival 2013 soon to begin and the first ever graphic design focussed weekend and selection of events ahead I though now would be a good time to mention that I'll be doing some lettering 'live' on Saturday 14th September at the V&A .

Sarah Hyndman is the brains behind Type Tasting who run typography workshops on various themes to 'take participants back to their creative roots through play and exploration'. For the London Design Festival Sarah has curated an exhibition of typographic responses to the theme of 'London' and will be hosting two days of typography workshops on the 14th and 15th September respectively  - On the 14th september I'll be there 'live lettering' and documenting the day as it happens.

The workshops are open to all so feel free to drop in and get involved

Welcome

Hello, hello
